Bohdana Frolyak, Ukrainian Composer
Bohdana Frolyak was born in Vydyniv, a village in Ukraine, in 1968. She graduated from Lviv Conservatory as a composer, and had further studies in contemporary music, jazz, and composition in the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland. She has composed many works, including symphonies, chamber music, and vocal pieces. Symphony Number 2, which we are playing today, was composed in 2009. Frolyak currently resides in Ukraine and continues to create new works emphasizing Ukrainian cultural identity. The content and themes of the composer are broad, ranging from memories of the past, reminders of the beauty of the world, to reflections on death and prayer. A feature of her music is the presence in her work of elements of different eras and musical styles from Baroque to Impressionism.
